A first massage can feel a little uncertain if you do not know what happens. The short version: it is straightforward, you stay in control the whole time, and you are covered with a towel or sheet for most styles. Here is what to expect.
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you can fill in a short health form without rushing. The therapist will usually ask about any injuries, pain, medical conditions or pregnancy, and what you want from the session. Tell them your preferred pressure — light, medium or firm — and any areas to focus on or avoid.
For oil-based styles like Swedish, you undress to your comfort level in private and lie under a towel or sheet; only the area being worked is uncovered. For Thai massage you stay fully clothed. Speak up at any point if the pressure is too much, too little, or if anything is uncomfortable — the therapist adjusts to you.
You may feel relaxed, a little sleepy, or slightly tender in areas that were worked. Drinking water helps, and mild soreness usually fades within a day. Take your time getting up, and re-book then if you want to keep the benefits going.
