The terms "remedial" and "relaxation" describe two different goals. One treats a specific problem; the other unwinds the whole body. Choosing correctly saves you money and gets you better results.
Relaxation massage uses smooth, flowing strokes at a gentle to medium pressure. It aims to calm the nervous system, ease general tension and reduce stress. There is no diagnosis and no targeted treatment — it is about feeling good and switching off.
Remedial massage is a treatment, not just a pampering session. The therapist assesses your pain, stiffness or injury and applies targeted techniques — trigger-point work, deep tissue, stretching — to the specific muscles involved. It is commonly used for back and neck pain, sports injuries, headaches and postural strain, and it is often claimable on private health insurance.
Many clinics offer both, and a good therapist will tell you honestly which is appropriate. If you want to claim on your health fund, mention it when booking so the clinic can confirm the therapist's qualifications and the rebate.
